Quiha General Hospital, the only tertiary hospital in Tigrai, says it is no longer able to do surgeries as medical stocks continue to run low. Medical director at the hospital, Dr. Kirbom Tewolde, said the hospital has just 33 percent of necessary medical supplies in stock and will be forced to close its doors if medical equipment is not made available to the facility.

The Medical Director said the massive destruction of health infrastructure during occupation by Ethiopian forces and their allies from Eritrea; that has been followed by a yearlong siege has weakened the facility to a state where it may be forced to discontinue providing service to its patients.

Quiha General Hospital, located in the outskirts of Mekelle, is the only tertiary hospital in the region; and was designed to provide health coverage for as many as five million people in Tigrai and neighboring regions. The hospital is known for its cooperation with health facilities across the world that has resulted in programs that would bring ophthalmologists from around the world to conduct free procedures for people from rural and poor communities.

Quiha General Hospital, the only tertiary hospital in Tigrai that used to provide service to as many as five million people in Tigrai and neighboring regions has stated that it is on the verge of collapsing as part of the Ethiopian government’s blockade on medical supplies.

Earlier this month, Ayder Referral Hospital had announced that it had been forced to close its doors due to lack of fuel and vital services; such as electricity and banking.
