Axum is bustling with life and excitement on the eve of Hidar Tsion, the grand annual celebration of Saint Mary of Zion churh. The historic streets of the city are adorned with vibrant decorations, and the air is filled with spiritual hymns and songs as pilgrims and visitors from across the globe converge on the roads of sacred city.
The atmosphere is electric, with thousands of faithful participating in evening prayers at the historic St. Mary of Zion Church compound.
Candlelight illuminates the church, as worshippers dressed in traditional white attire, move in unison, singing praises and offering prayers in anticipation of the feast day. Axum’s residents have opened their homes to welcome the influx of pilgrims, creating a sense of unity and hospitality that reflects the city’s deep-rooted spiritual culture.
Residents of Axum, especially the youth, have been carrying out foot washing ceremony this afternoon symbolizing respect and hospitality.
Flights, Guests, and Economic Impact
Ethiopian Airlines has made 24 flights between November 27 and 29 to accommodate the massive influx of visitors. This marked the airline’s largest operation to Axum since flights resumed in June 2024, following the restoration of peace in the region. The flights have not only brought local and international pilgrims but have also symbolized the revival of Axum’s connectivity to the rest of the world after a genocidal war.
Local officials estimate over 3 million Birr in revenue will be generated from ticket sales on heritage sites.
“We did not inflate the price. Tickets are being massively sold.” says Gebremedhn Fitsumbirhan, Head of Axum Culture and Tourism office.
Guests from across Ethiopia and abroad are expected to contribute to the economy of the ancient city, which has long been a central hub for faith and culture among the Tigrayan community.

Toga, 54, arrived in Axum for the first time. He was fascinated to witness a culture from a different world than his own, Japanese.
“This is impressive especially the pilgrims gathering. I want to come next year.”

As the faithful prepare to honor Saint Mary of Zion on Her feast day, Axum stands as a beacon of history, faith, and culture, welcoming all who come to partake in the celebration.
